For example, researchers found that a female stingray had made a 400-kilometer (250-mile) round trip to birth her pups. The smalleye stingray may be the largest of marine stingrays, but the species remains a mystery. It’s believed to be widely distributed across the Indo-West Pacific and has been recorded at sizes up to 2.2 meters (7 feet) across. Yet the giant ray is rarely seen and is listed as “data deficient” on the IUCN Red List. The only place where people do regularly encounter the smalleye stingray (Megatrygon microps) is off the coast of Mozambique. There, researchers first recorded the species’ presence off Tofo Beach in 2004. Since then, they’ve been compiling photographs and videos of the stingrays taken opportunistically by both research teams and recreational divers over the last 15 years, creating an image database of the animal. This database is now helping researchers gain some of the first insights into this elusive species, according to a new study published in PeerJ.“We reported the first sightings of smalleye stingray in 2004 and have since been racing against the clock to learn more about their ecology before it is too late,” Andrea Marshall, a co-author of the study and co-founder and principal scientist of the Marine Megafauna Foundation, said in a statement. “This species of ray is likely in trouble too but we can’t protect what we don’t know much about.”A scuba diver with a smalleye stingray. Image by Andrea Marshall/Marine Megafauna Foundation. The researchers focused on images from three main regions — Zavora, Tofo Beach/Barra, and the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park (BANP) — and found that all smalleye stingrays seem to have uniquely identifiable patterns of white spots on their backs, ones that have remained unchanged over the years. Using these patterns, the research team could identify 70 unique individuals during their study period, mostly from the Tofo Beach/Barra area where recreational divers tend to go.The team also identified 15 smalleye stingrays that had been seen off the Mozambique coast multiple times. One visibly pregnant female stingray, for example, was first spotted off Tofo Beach in January 2017, then seen again about 200 kilometers (124 miles) away, just south of BANP, some 100 days later. The same female was seen again off Tofo Beach in June 2018, suggesting she’d completed a round trip of at least 400 kilometers (250 miles). This time she was no longer pregnant, indicating she had given birth somewhere along the way.As more data on these rays trickle in, scientists will eventually be able to assess the smalleye stingray’s conservation status for the IUCN Red List. For now, though, researchers say the species is already likely threatened by fishing activity.“There are so many questions that remain unanswered about this rare species,” Marshall said. “Where do they live, how fast do they mature and how do they reproduce? Filling these knowledge gaps is crucial to figuring out how to protect them properly in Mozambique and other parts of the Indian Ocean.”The team says it hopes that more recreational divers and citizen scientists will help fill these information gaps. “Smalleye stingrays may look intimidating at first glance with their large, razor-sharp tail spines, but they’re actually really charismatic and easy to approach,” Atlantine Boggio-Pasqua, a co-author of the study who volunteered with the Marine Megafauna Foundation, said in the statement. “We hope to receive many photo and video contributions from citizen scientists in future. They could tell us more about the species’ habitat preference as well as feeding and cleaning behavior.”Fishermen with a smalleye stingray. 28 March 2003Bastion executive chef Kenny Ngubane is determined to prove that local is lekker. For many years, he says, local restaurants have been subject to kitchen colonialism, where foreign cooks ran kitchens and their own native food dominated menus. The result? Eighty percent of the food that restaurants offered was foreign, while just 20 percent was South African.“Local cooking is very important, but we are so into international cooking”, says Ngubane. “When people come to South Africa, they want South African food, but yet we don’t give to them – we give them a dish like crab thermidor that they can have in their own countries.“When we go China we want to eat noodles. When we go to India we want to eat rice. When visitors come to South Africa, they want South African food.”Bastion fans need not fear: their crab thermidor won’t be replaced with chakalaka, pap or morogo. But more local foods are being featured on the restaurant’s menu. “A lot of South African chefs are starting to cook more local foods. I think that people are realising that we are losing our culture”, says Ngubane.Head there now and you can dig into Ulundi Ndlovu’s Chicken, made with popular chakalaka, a meal Ngubane named after one of his 22 sous-chefs who excelled in the kitchen. Or bite into a Vrystaat fillet served with mielies on the cob, done true Boere style. Or there is Simonsberg sirloin marinated in a blend of Cape wines, served with Simonsberg brie cheese or a slice of Mpumalanga venison. But Ngubane is firm about one much-loved indigenous dish that won’t appear on the Bastion’s menu anytime soon – tripe. “We don’t do tripe. That will chase people away!” laughs Ngubane.“I think that it’s important when introducing more local foods that you also have to look at the type of establishment and the standard it has. I think it must be phased in slowly, not just with a boom! If I’m doing an African menu, I will introduce it slowly – kind of like the way our democracy came into being.”

Airline chiefs are generally optimistic about the future despite a headline-grabbing $US1.87 billion loss at Etihad Airways caused mainly by a fleet write-down and one-off charges related to troubled airline investments.A business confidence survey conducted in early July by the International Air Transport Association found that more than three-quarters of airline chief financial officers and heads of cargo indicated profitability increased in the second quarter of calendar 2017 compared to last year.“Industry heads were markedly more confident about the outlook for profitability over the year ahead than they have been in recent surveys, mainly reflecting expectations that the demand backdrop will remain robust,’’ the survey said.“Once again, the survey responses were consistent with the strong opening to 2017 for both passenger and freight volumes.“Given the broad-based pick-up in global economic conditions, more than four-fifths of respondents expect passenger volumes to rise over the next 12 months, while the majority of respondents expect air freight volumes to continue their positive growth trend over the year ahead too.”Half of the respondents to the Business Confidence Survey reported decreased operating costs and responses about yields “were consistent with the bottoming out of passenger yields and an upward trend in freight yields’’, the survey said.Airline employment was also up, with 44 per cent of respondents planning to add workers in the year ahead. But it was a gloomier appraisal that came out of Etihad’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi. The Etihad loss compared to a profit last year of $US103m and comes at a time the Gulf carriers have been hit by lower oil prices, increased competition and external events such terrorism in Europe and adverse US government policies.Earlier this year, Dubai-based Emirates announced a 70 per cent slump in 2016-17 annual profit as officials predicted another challenging year due to “hyper competition” and volatility in many markets.“This year is just as challenging for the global aviation industry and the ever-evolving competitive environment is likely to impact overall performance in 2017,’’ said Etihad interim group chief executive officer Ray Gammell. “However, our airline business remains strong and class-leading, and as an aviation group, we are in a stronger position.”Etihad Airways chief executive Peter Baumgartner added: “We are in an industry characterised by overcapacity, declining market sizes on key routes, and changing customer behaviour as a weak global economy affects spending appetite.“Our answer to these challenges is innovation and reinvention, and this gives Etihad Airways a competitive edge as we seek to leverage opportunities offered to us by a changing environment.’’Etihad took a $US1.06 billion charge on aircraft to reflect the market value of the planes and the fact it was moving early to phase out some types. It also wrote off $US808m on investments made under previous chief executive James Hogan as part of a strategy to expand the airline’s global footprint. These mainly related to failed carrier Alitalia, currently in administration after unions rejected a restructuring deal, and financially-troubled airberlin. The charges suggest it is following a strategy used by Qantas to get its balance sheet in order by taking the write-downs in one massive hit. Qantas subsequently posted record profits.Etihad said legacy fuel hedging contracts also affected 2016 performance, although this was expected to have a diminished financial impact in 2017.Etihad did not provide an underlying pre-tax result but noted passenger revenue at the “core airline” had remained flat at $US4.9 billion, despite an increase in passengers from 17.6 million in 2015 to a record 18.5 million in 2016. Capacity was up by 9 per cent.Yields, a measure of average fares, fell 8 per cent “amid market capacity pressures and the tough global economic climate” but this was partially offset by an 11 per cent reduction in costs.“Yields were under pressure in all cabins, with business class impacted particularly as corporate travel policies continued to encourage flyers to downgrade to Economy,’’ Baumgartner said.Etihad has been shedding staff as part of a restructuring program called Right Size & Shape which Gammell said had produced savings of about 4 per cent by the end of 2016.“We are focused on maintaining the solid performance of our core airline business – operationally and financially – even amid difficult market headwinds,’’ he said. “At the same time, we continue to implement changes across the group as part of the comprehensive strategic review, with a focus on improving revenues and reducing costs. ‘’It was better news in Singapore, where SIA Group airlines reported a 45.6 per cent rise in first-quarter 2017-18 operating profit to $S281 million ($US207m) after a surprise loss in last year’s fourth quarter.Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, Budget Aviation Holdings, SIA Cargo and SIA engineering were all profitable with profit at the “parent airline’’ up from $S197m in the first quarter of 2016-17 to $S241m.Passenger revenue rose $S121 million as traffic increased by 7.6 per cent. However, the airline said the business outlook remained challenging “as the uncertain global economic climate and geopolitical concerns, coupled with overcapacity in our key markets, continue to dampen yield performance.“Fuel prices are expected to remain volatile in the months ahead, as the global oil market continues to adjust to demand and supply conditions,’’ it said.

Sponsored by the Crime Accountability Partnership ProgramShoplifting is often cited as the most frequently committed crime in societies around the world. It occurs so often that it can be easy to overlook—or to forget—just how critical a retailer’s response is to any single incident. But whether a store unwittingly helps to create a lifelong shoplifter or puts a person on a law-abiding path is directly linked to how it approaches these everyday occurrences. The implication of crime data is pretty clear. Nearly 55 percent of adult shoplifters admit to beginning their criminal careers during their teenage years, and one in four shoplifters is a juvenile. So the effectiveness of retailers’ response to today’s juvenile offenders directly impacts future shoplifting rates. Get a shoplifter to change their behavior, and you may eliminate hundreds or thousands of potential criminal acts. Miss the opportunity, and all retailers will suffer the enduring consequences.- Sponsor – The action retailers should take at this critical juncture first requires an understanding of what goes on in the minds of non-professional offenders. While no two shoplifters are alike, there are commonalities. One typical characteristic is a lack of awareness and understanding about the crime of shoplifting as it relates to themselves, the victim, or the community.Faced with increasingly sophisticated and devious organized retail crime enterprises, loss prevention practitioners can be forgiven for forgetting just how unsophisticated amateur shoplifters often are. But studies of shoplifters reveal surprising ignorance, willful or not. Consider the most common myths that have been exposed in interviews with apprehended shoplifters:Shoplifting is only a crime in some states. You can never be arrested unless you leave the store with the merchandise you stole. If you buy something, it proves you aren’t a shoplifter. You aren’t guilty if you are just holding something for your friend who stole something in the store.Acting as a lookout or blocking an employee or customer’s view while a friend steals is perfectly legal. It’s okay to shoplift if it’s the store’s fault: the store charges high prices, the lines at the checkout counter are too long, or the salespeople are nasty. Most stores will just let you pay for the items you took and then let you go.If you cry and say it was just a mistake, most stores will just let you go.Shoplifting isn’t such a big deal compared to other crimes.Being caught shoplifting can’t really affect a person’s future. No one is hurt by the little bit a shoplifter takes from a store. You can’t go to jail for just shoplifting.[text_ad use_post=’131499′]Debunking these myths is challenging, especially for juveniles. While explaining the truth about shoplifting to kids before they offend seems like the most forward-thinking solution, describing to them the theoretical consequences of being caught—such as civil fines, community service, or having a record—typically falls on deaf ears. People, especially kids, are driven by their experiences and those of their peers—not by warnings of an uncertain event. This is why retailers’ reaction to catching a shoplifter takes on enormous and lasting consequences. Apprehension creates a rare opportunity to educate offenders—juvenile and adult alike—and to dispel myths at a time when individuals are open to the lesson.According to the Josephson Institute biannual Survey of Youth, 98 percent of respondents said it was important to them that people trust them. When youth shoplift, they risk losing the trust that is most precious to them—that of their parents and families. They also appreciate—temporarily—that shoplifting has the potential to disrupt the future that they expect to enjoy. At the time of apprehension, retailers have a real and rare opportunity to change juvenile offenders’ thoughts, beliefs, and behavior by addressing the things that are meaningful to them—for example, by increasing their awareness of the long-term effects of criminal convictions. But the opportunity is fleeting. As soon as an offender is caught—either juvenile or adult—the clock starts ticking. Apprehension provides a teachable moment, but there is a narrow window of opportunity—while they are still scared and ashamed—to do something to re-shape their thinking to prevent repeat offenses. The immediate aftermath of an apprehension is the largest determinant in whether the individual will shoplift again. Not every juvenile offender will be a shoplifter for life. Research shows that unethical consumer behavior often reflects transient opportunism that may diminish as people mature and are better educated. But it is also true that repeat offenders are born when apprehensions fail to change their hypothesis that the risk is worth the reward.Retailers are both the primary victims of shoplifting and, often, the first and only touchpoint with shoplifting offenders. So the skill with which they handle apprehensions is a primary determinant of future rates of shoplifting. For example, retailers can effectively reduce repeat offenses by providing offenders access to age-appropriate, offense-specific education.Shoplifter apprehensions are common and routine, but it is critical not to overlook just how important each individual apprehension is. If retailers arm themselves with the information, tools, and skills to take effective advantage of this teachable moment, it’s possible to take potential lifelong shoplifters out of circulation. The only other recourse is to develop an update yourself or manually update the settings by visiting the system. Formerly known as Web Admin for Windows, Real-Time System Manager provides a powerful set of functions for IT specialists. In part 5 of this article series we covered the main points for Real-Time Console Infrastructure troubleshooting. As a natural extension of RTCI, Real-Time System Manager troubleshooting is covered in this article as part 6. With an emphasis on credentials and connection methods, this article provides information to overcome the most common issues seen when using the Real-Time tab for direct, one-to-one computer interaction. Check the documentation for any new BIOS versions that include vPro to see if they’ve corrected this. In the Altiris Console browse to View > Solutions > Real-Time Console Infrastructure > Configuration > select Manage Credentials Profiles. Network Filtering In this example my system is in a workgroup and reported only the hostname as the FQDN, which DNS had no trouble resolving. If this fqdn is not reachable via DNS, we won’t be able to connect to the AMT functionality.NOTE: We use several methods, including IP address, for WMI. WMI functionality may show correctly when AMT is absent in this situation Redirection Invalid ParameterWhen initiating an IDER (IDE Redirect) session to an external source such as an .iso file, the following error appears in the console: SNMP community strings Contact your OEM if they have not and request a status! Invalid FQDNTo view what FQDN the Real-Time is using, use the ‘Hardware Management’ node in the RTSM tree. The following screenshot shows what AMT is using: Authentication IssuesAnother common issue concerns authentication to the system via the Real-Time tab. First, let me discuss the methods RTSM uses to authenticate to a target system. Can DNS resolve this address? If no, we’ll need to fix the issue in one of the following ways. Allow the following ports, based off your environment: Under the WMI tab also check the box as above and provide a user that has admin privileges to the target system. IDE Redirect (IDER) In one case we supplied only AMT credentials in the Profile which allowed it to authenticate to AMT while a multiple protocol authentication profile failed. Back at the main screen check the box under the ‘Default’ column until the green check-mark uses your new Profile. IntroductionReal-Time System Manager provides a powerful tool for directly connecting to a system agentlessly with functionality available through WMI and Intel AMT. This article covers the issues associated with general functions seen with both technologies but with emphasis on the AMT functions. The following sections cover areas of troubleshooting: IDE Redirect (IDER)IDE Redirect allows a system to be remotely booted to a file, drive, or virtual disc. There are a number of potential issues to be aware of when working with IDER in a vPro environment. The below items include well-known issues and their resolutions. Previously successfully used credentials from past RTSM sessions The number one reason this occurs is due to a firewall being engaged. Firewalls need to allow AMT traffic through. If a firewall is enabled, use the following details to resolve the AMT issue: Connection IssuesUnder the current architecture the FQDN is the primary method for connecting and authenticating to AMT on remote systems. If the FQDN the Real-Time tab is using does not resolve in DNS, then AMT connectivity and thus functionality will not be available. FQDN connectivity issues are the number one issues we see with RTSM connections to AMT. WMI digest or Domain account Once the tree loads, open the Real-Time System manager folder, open Administrative Tasks, and click on ‘Hardware Management’. Nslookup dellvpro Give the profile a name and then save it. All known good credentials used to connect via RTSM to a system 10.10.10.1 Dellvpro The other issue we’ve seen is where the system is simply unavailable for one reason or another. AMT is available if the system is off but still connected to the network, but WMI or if the system is unplugged from power or off the network RTSM obviously cannot function. Verify that the system is available if nothing resolves this issue. Once the page loads, if AMT is missing as an available technology, take note of the name displayed as in the screenshot above. Authentication MethodsRuntime Profile – The Runtime profile contains he following information: User-defined Profiles – Profiles can be created that specifically provide credentials for the four types of technologies: Manually entered credentials – When RTSM tries to connect, if the default profile set in the RTCI configuration fails to authenticate, the left-hand tree will still load but each node will prompt the user for credentials. A user can put in an AMT account, Domain user, or digest user that has rights on the target system. When authentication succeeds, these credentials are then stored in the Runtime Profile for the target system.
Check the collection you are launching Resource Explorer from. Sometimes the identity of the system is incorrect. For AMT you can launch RTSM from the Provisioned collections populated with the Resource Synchronization. Test to see if this new profile is successful. Note that you’ll need to launch IE fresh to use the new settings. Supply the admin user credentials set when the managed vPro systems were provisioned. AMT digest or Kerberos-authenticated user Go to Start, Run, type in cmd, and click OK. ASF digest or Domain account Power management operation failed.Redirection session start has failed. See logs for more details. Troubleshooting AuthenticationThe following method will help identify issues and offer ways to work-around and solutions. These have been compiled through experience when troubleshooting issues with failed authentication with RTSM. Unfortunately WMI has a known issue with the Windows firewall where the dynamic ports WMI uses after initiation will be blocked. It’s a bug in WMI that has been addressed in Vista. Previous Operating Systems do not have a resolution at this time. Check the firmware updates for a new BIOS. 16993 – For TLS-enabled, encrypted AMT traffic – If https is required for communication with AMT, this port will be used Under the Intel® AMT tab check the box ‘Enable this technology in the profile’. This is the default profile that will be used when connecting via the Real-Time tab. FIX DNS and/or the Altiris record: If DNS can be fixed, this is the preferred method. The difficulty is finding out why the Altiris Agent reported the incorrect record. Once DNS is fixed, have the Altiris Agent run Basic Inventory. The table location we pull this out of for management in RTSM is Inv_AeX_AC_Location, column: . Use the ‘Manage’ node available in RTSM (see the below screenshot): By putting in the IP address of the system, we’ll use the IP to lookup the FQDN and not make any assumptions. !Manageshortcut.JPG! Note: If you use another product such as Dell or HP’s plug-ins to this tab, you’ll simply not have the ‘Real-Time System Manager’ node underneath Real-Time Consoles. The Notification Server log shows the following error: 16992 – For non-TLS encrypted traffic – if you are not using TLS this is the port that will be used for communication This is caused by Intel’s redirection library requiring a correct floppy device to initiate an IDER session (either floppy image or real removable device). Real-Time System Manager 6.2 can work around this. If you put floppy.img file into Program Files\Altiris\RTSM\UIData folder, then the issue will not occur. Real-Time unable to connectIf WMI and AMT functions are unavailable, you’ll get a message when you click on the Real-Time tab indicating that the functionality isn’t available. See the following screenshot: The Intel SCS AMT password sent to systems when provisioning occurs Create an inclusion in the firewall properties. Another options is to disable the firewall when you need to manage the system via RTSM. Create a new profile by clicking the blue + on the icon bar in the right-hand pane. IDER or SOL DisabledIn some instances Intel vPro systems are arriving from the OEM with IDER and SOL disabled in the BIOS. When disabled, neither of these functions work from any management engine, including RTSM. Correcting this oversight is not easy, especially if the OEMs do not offer a solution by a firmware or BIOS update. Use the following method to resolve the issue: Go to the Support site for the OEM for the systems. Open the Real-Time tab for the AMT system you are managing. If it is not, try entering credentials in manually when you hit the system under the Real-Time tab. See the screenshot below for the connection icon to switch between WMI and AMT authentication. If two show in this area, both technologies are available but not authenticated. !RTSMconnectiontype.jpg! Authentication Issues Update the Servers HOSTS or LMHOSTS files to contain the mapping to the invalid name. For example find the LMHOSTS file, edit it and add a line <IP ADDRESS> <FQDN>, as in this example: Use these steps to see the FQDN is the issue: ConclusionThis should account for the most common issues we’ve seen, and allow you to successfully use RTSM with AMT technology, avoiding those issues.

Chennai, Jan 18 (PTI) The trial in the nearly three decade- old murder case in which former Sri Lankan Minister Douglas Devananda is an accused commenced today at a city court. The trial began with the examination of witnesses before IVth Additional Sessions Judge M Shanti. Examining witness Gurumurthy, the Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) questioned him whether he would be able to identify the accused, to which the former replied in the affirmative. Following this, the APP filed a memo seeking a clarification from the court whether Devananda should be produced in the court personnaly or appear through video conferencing for identification by the witness. The court then adjourned the trial to February 1,2016. Devananda, then a member of Eelam People?s Revolutionary Front, is the third accused in the 1987 shootout at Choolaimedu here in which one person was killed. All nine accused in the case were arrested but absconded after being released on bail. A non-bailable warrant had been issued against Douglas, who later became a minister in the Mahinda Rajapakse government. He did not return to India but moved courts for cancellation of the NBW. Allowing his plea, Justice C T Selvam of the Madras High Court had on September 10, 2014, permitted Devananda to stand trial through video conferencing and ordered him to appear through the facility at the office of the High Commissioner of India in Colombo as and when required. However, as the other accused remained absconding, the trial in the case could not be proceeded with. But decks were cleared after the prosecution in October last moved a petition seeking to split the case and conduct the trial against Douglas. The other accused, all Sri Lankan Tamils, would face trial as and when they are nabbed and produced before the court. PTI COR VS PAL MVVadvertisement
