BASKETBALL: The National Capital District Amateur Basketball Association will be starting its pre-season competition at the end of this month. Competition coordinator Bernard Elavo has urged interested teams as well as current clubs to contact him to register their interest for the 2020 season. “We have not started the competition last year after our successful grand final held at the Hohola basketball Courts which was supposed to be the 2019-2020 season due to a lot of programs happening in the nation’s capital,” he said. However, Elavo is optimistic that similar interests from last year will continue this season when the preseason starts at the home of basketball at the Hohola Courts. Elavo also said that there are a lot of happenings this year with the Basketball Federation of PNG inviting associations to host some major events shelved for some years. Events like the National Premier Club Championships, the National All Stars and the youth tournament. NCDABA were the champions in the women’s National All Stars championship in 2016 while their men’s team came third behind two PNG Premier Men’s basketball teams. “This year, there will be the Under 15 FIBA Oceania Youth tournament and the association is looking forward to fielding a solid youth team this year,” Elavo said. A total of nine clubs took part in the NCDABA for last season. They are Gerehu Jets, 8-Mile, 9-Mile, Tamaraws, Mayawala, Flames, Spiders, Birdwings and Gala Hox. “That’s a big number if you look at the number of clubs. Each club had to field an under 15, under 17 and the open division in both the men and women’s divisions and we are expecting the same number this season,” Elavo said. He urged any interested teams to contact him to register their interest. “We will be sending out draws for the preseason shortly once we’ve confirms the number of teams for this season,” he said. Elavo can be contacted on 7663 2862 for more information regarding the start of the NCDABA season.
